About The Song
Yellow Moon is a country ballad written by Richard “Spady” Brannon and recorded by Don Williams as the title track of his thirteenth studio album. Brannon crafted a nostalgic reflection on lost love and the shared night sky that connects people across distances. Williams, with his characteristic warm baritone and relaxed style, made the song a centerpiece of the project during his peak MCA Records years in the early 1980s.
The album Yellow Moon was released on March 25, 1983, through MCA Records. Produced by Williams himself and longtime collaborator Garth Fundis, the ten-track collection runs 31 minutes and 25 seconds. Yellow Moon appears as the fifth track, lasting two minutes and 55 seconds, positioned between Wrong End of the Rainbow and the single Love Is on a Roll.
By 1983 Don Williams had already earned the nickname the Gentle Giant and compiled a long string of number-one hits on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart. Born in 1939 in Floydada, Texas, he maintained a steady presence in country music by choosing material that emphasized quiet emotion and straightforward storytelling rather than following radio trends of the time.
The album Yellow Moon reached number 13 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart and climbed to number one on the Canadian RPM Country Albums chart. It generated three charting singles—Love Is on a Roll, Nobody but You, and Stay Young—yet the title track itself remained an album cut and did not appear on any Billboard singles chart under Williams’ name.
The lyrics open with the rising moon staring down at the narrator, stirring memories of arms that once held him tight and a night that ended too soon beneath a yellow moon. He wonders aloud whether his former love is watching the same starry sky and asks the moon to shine on wherever she may be. A second verse recalls quiet conversations with the moon and the summer night in June when they fell in love, turning personal loss into a gentle, universal longing.
Williams delivered the verses with his signature restraint, letting the acoustic guitar and subtle instrumentation carry the reflective mood without added drama. The track sat comfortably among the album’s mix of ballads and mid-tempo cuts, reinforcing the overall tone of thoughtful country music that had defined much of his MCA catalog up to that point.
Brannon’s composition became one of the quieter highlights of Williams’ 1980s output, illustrating how the singer often turned simple celestial imagery into deeply felt storytelling. The album preceded his move to Capitol Records and stood as part of a consistent run of releases before health issues later slowed his schedule. Williams passed away in 2017 at age 78. Yellow Moon continues to appear in his catalog as a reminder of the enduring power of shared memories under the same night sky.

Lyric
The moon is on the rise it stares at me tonight.
I’m reminded of the arms that held me tight.
Last time I held you it ended all to soon
We were lying underneath a yellow moon. There’s a yellow moon hangin’ in a starry sky
Oh, I wonder if you’re watchin’ it too.
There’s a yellow moon hangin’ in a starry sky
Wherever you are it’s watchin’ over you.
Oh shine on, shine on yellow moon.[Instrumental]
Sometimes we sit and talk me and that old moon.
I ask him are you happy or if you’re blue.
I start to reminisce to summers night in June,
We fell in love underneath a yellow moon. There’s a yellow moon hangin’ in a starry sky
Oh, I wonder if you’re watchin’ it too.
There’s a yellow moon hangin’ in a starry sky
Wherever you are it’s watchin’ over you.
Oh. shine on, shine on yellow moon. There’s a yellow moon hangin’ in a starry sky
Oh, I wonder if you’re watchin’ it too.
There’s a yellow moon hangin’ in a starry sky
Wherever you are it’s watchin’ over you.
Oh shine on, shine on yellow moon…
