About The Song

“Make the World Go Away” was written by Hank Cochran in 1963. The song was first recorded by Ray Price, who took it to number two on the Billboard country chart that year. Timi Yuro also released a version that reached the pop charts, and Jim Reeves recorded it during his final studio sessions for RCA. Eddy Arnold cut his own version on June 22, 1965, at RCA Victor Studio in Nashville under the production of Chet Atkins.

Arnold’s recording was released in October 1965 as a single from the album *My World*. It reached number one on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and also topped the Adult Contemporary chart. On the Billboard Hot 100 it peaked at number six, the highest pop placement of Arnold’s career. The single further charted at number eight in the United Kingdom.

The lyric expresses a desire to leave everyday troubles behind and find comfort in a familiar relationship. The singer asks a former partner to speak the reassuring words once shared between them so that the pressures of the outside world can temporarily disappear. Arnold’s smooth, measured delivery and the polished Nashville Sound arrangement, featuring strings and restrained instrumentation, gave the recording broad appeal beyond traditional country audiences.

By the mid-1960s Arnold had already enjoyed a long run of success dating back to the late 1940s. A quieter stretch preceded the mid-decade revival that began with “What’s He Doing in My World.” “Make the World Go Away” became one of the central records of that comeback period and helped define the smoother, more crossover-oriented style associated with the Nashville Sound.

The album *My World* benefited from the single’s performance and contributed to Arnold’s renewed commercial presence. In the years that followed he continued to place hits on both country and pop charts. The song itself has remained one of the most widely recognized recordings of his career and has been covered by numerous artists in different genres.

Within the broader history of 1960s country music, Eddy Arnold’s version of “Make the World Go Away” stands as a clear example of how carefully produced material could reach both country and mainstream listeners. Its combination of strong songwriting, distinctive vocal performance, and commercial success helped solidify Arnold’s place among the leading figures of the era.

Lyric

Make the world go away
And get it off my shoulders
Say the things you used to say
And make the world go away
Do you remember when you loved me
Before the world took me astray
If you do, then forgive me
And make the world go away
Make the world go away
And get it off my shoulders
Say the things you used to say
And make the world go away
I’m sorry if I hurt you
I’ll make it up day by day
Just say you love me like you used to
And make the world go away
Make the world go away
And get it off my shoulders
Say the things you used to say
And make the world go away
Say the things you used to say
And make the world go away
