About The Song
“There Goes My Everything” was written by Dallas Frazier and recorded by Jack Greene on August 6, 1966. Produced by Owen Bradley for Decca Records, the single was released in October of that year. It served as the title track of Greene’s debut album, which appeared in December 1966. The recording marked a major breakthrough for the singer after years as a member of Ernest Tubb’s band.
The single reached number one on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and remained there for seven weeks. It spent a total of twenty-one weeks on the country chart and crossed over to the pop side, peaking at number 65 on the Billboard Hot 100. The accompanying album also topped the Billboard Top Country Albums chart.
At the first Country Music Association Awards in 1967, the song and its related releases received major recognition. “There Goes My Everything” won Single of the Year and Song of the Year. The album of the same name was named Album of the Year, and Greene himself was named Male Vocalist of the Year. These honors established him as one of the leading new figures in country music.
The lyric describes a man watching his partner walk away. He realizes in that moment that she had been his reason for living, the one of his dreams, and his only possession. The simple, direct language and Greene’s clear vocal delivery gave the song immediate emotional weight. Bradley’s production provided a polished Nashville Sound setting that suited the material without overpowering it.
Prior to the hit, Greene had spent limited time on the charts as a solo artist. The success of “There Goes My Everything” changed that trajectory and opened the door to a string of further country hits. The song has since been covered by a range of artists, including Engelbert Humperdinck, whose version became a major international success, and Elvis Presley.
Within the country music of the mid-1960s, Jack Greene’s recording of “There Goes My Everything” stands as both a commercial landmark and a career-defining moment. Its chart dominance, award recognition, and lasting presence as a standard have secured its place among the notable hits of the era.

Lyric
There goes my only possession
There goes my everything
I hear footsteps slowly walking
As they gently walk across a lonely floor
And a voice is softly saying
Darling, this will be goodbye forevermore
There goes my reason for living
There goes the one of my dreams
There goes my only possession
There goes my everything
As my memory turns back the pages
I can see the happy tears we had before
Now the love that kept this old heart beating
Has been shattered by the closing of a door
There goes my reason for living
There goes the one of my dreams
There goes my only possession
There goes my everything
