About The Song
“Waltz Across Texas” was written by Billy Talmadge Tubb, a nephew of Ernest Tubb who also recorded under the name Billy Talmadge. Ernest Tubb recorded the song on April 19, 1965, at RCA Victor Studio in Nashville with his longtime backing group, the Texas Troubadours. Produced by Owen Bradley for Decca Records, the single was released later that year as Decca 31824, backed with “Lots of Luck,” and credited to Ernest Tubb and His Texas Troubadours.
The record reached number thirty-four on the Billboard country chart. While it was not one of Tubb’s biggest commercial hits in terms of peak position, it quickly became one of his most requested numbers and a lasting favorite among fans. The song’s gentle waltz tempo and straightforward romantic appeal made it a natural fit for dance halls across Texas, where it remains a standard for teaching the waltz.
The lyric presents a simple, heartfelt scene. When the singer dances with his partner, everyday troubles disappear and the world turns into a fairytale. Looking into her eyes, he feels he could waltz across the entire state of Texas with her in his arms. The imagery is light and affectionate, matching the easy, swinging rhythm of the arrangement.
By the mid-1960s Tubb had already enjoyed more than two decades of success, beginning with classics such as “Walking the Floor Over You.” His voice had grown deeper and more weathered, yet the Texas Troubadours—featuring players such as Leon Rhodes, Cal Smith, Buddy Charleton, Jack Drake, and Jack Greene—provided a clean, supportive sound that framed his delivery effectively. Owen Bradley’s production kept the recording uncluttered and true to Tubb’s traditional style.
The song’s popularity grew steadily through live performances and later reissues. It has been covered by a range of artists and continues to appear on compilations of Tubb’s work. In Texas especially, it holds a special place as both a romantic standard and a practical dance-floor favorite. A later re-release in the late 1970s brought it back onto the country charts, confirming its enduring appeal.
Within Ernest Tubb’s long career, “Waltz Across Texas” stands as a late-period signature. Its modest chart peak belies the lasting affection it earned from audiences, and the combination of family songwriting, classic Troubadour musicianship, and a memorable waltz melody has kept it among the best-loved recordings of his later years.

Lyric
When we dance together, my world’s in disguise
It’s a fairyland tale that’s come true
And when you look at me with those stars in your eyes
I could waltz across Texas with you
Waltz across Texas with you in my arms
Waltz across Texas with you
Like a storybook ending, I’m lost in your charms
And I could waltz across Texas with you
Oh, Buddy now
And Leon
My heartaches and troubles are just up and gone
The moment that you come in view
And with your hand in mine, dear, I could dance on and on
And I could waltz across Texas with you
Waltz across Texas with you in my arms
Waltz across Texas with you
Like a storybook ending, I’m lost in your charms
And I could waltz across Texas with you
