About The Song

“Blue Bayou” was written by Roy Orbison and Joe Melson. Linda Ronstadt recorded her version for the album *Simple Dreams*, released in September 1977 on Asylum Records. The single appeared on August 23, 1977, produced by Peter Asher and recorded at the Sound Factory in Hollywood. It became one of Ronstadt’s most successful and enduring recordings, transforming a modest 1963 Orbison hit into a major crossover success.

Ronstadt’s interpretation reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100, where it held for four weeks, and climbed to number two on the country chart. It also peaked at number three on the Adult Contemporary survey and number two on the Cash Box chart. Internationally the song performed strongly, reaching the top ranks in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Mexico, while charting more modestly in the United Kingdom. The single was certified gold by the RIAA and later achieved platinum status for sales exceeding one million copies in the United States.

The lyric expresses a longing to return to a simpler, quieter place called Blue Bayou. The singer recalls the comfort of that setting and the desire to leave behind the noise and demands of everyday life. Ronstadt’s clear, emotive delivery and the song’s measured arrangement gave the material a reflective quality that resonated with listeners across pop, country, and adult contemporary audiences.

The idea of recording the song came from J.D. Souther and Glenn Frey, who both suggested it to Ronstadt around the same time. Don Henley of the Eagles contributed backing vocals to the track. Under Asher’s production, the recording balanced country-rock elements with a polished soft-rock sound that characterized much of Ronstadt’s work in the mid-to-late 1970s.

*Simple Dreams* itself became one of Ronstadt’s biggest commercial successes, and “Blue Bayou” stood out as a highlight. The single earned Grammy nominations for Record of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female. Its chart performance also contributed to Ronstadt becoming one of the few artists of the era to place two singles in the Top Five simultaneously when “It’s So Easy” was also climbing the charts.

Within Linda Ronstadt’s catalog, “Blue Bayou” remains one of her signature songs. Its strong crossover success, lasting popularity, and connection to both her peak commercial years and the broader tradition of interpreting classic material have secured its place among the defining recordings of the late 1970s.

Lyric

I feel so bad I got a worried mind
I’m so lonesome all the time
Since I left my baby behind
On Blue Bayou
Saving nickles, saving dimes
Working til the sun don’t shine
Looking forward to happier times
On Blue Bayou
I’m going back someday
Come what may
To Blue Bayou
Where the folks are fine
And the world is mine
On Blue Bayou
Where those fishing boats
With their sails afloat
If I could only see
That familiar sunrise
Through sleepy eyes
How happy I’d be
Gonna see my baby again
Gonna be with some of my friends
Maybe I’ll feel better again
On Blue Bayou
Saving nickles saving dimes
Working til the sun don’t shine
Looking forward to happier times
On Blue Bayou
I’m going back someday
Come what may
To Blue Bayou
Where the folks are fine
And the world is mine
On Blue Bayou
Where those fishing boats
With their sails afloat
If I could only see
That familiar sunrise
Through sleepy eyes
How happy I’d be
Oh that boy of mine
By my side
The silver moon
And the evening tide
Oh some sweet day
Gonna take away
This hurting inside
Well I’ll never be blue
My dreams come true
On Blue Bayou
