“Am I That Easy to Forget” was written by Carl Belew and W.S. Stevenson and first recorded by Belew in late 1958. His version reached number nine on the Billboard country chart in 1959. The song quickly attracted other artists, including Skeeter Davis and Debbie Reynolds, before becoming a major pop success for Engelbert Humperdinck in 1967–68.
Jim Reeves recorded the song on November 21, 1961, during a Nashville session produced by Chet Atkins. The track appeared on his 1962 album *A Touch of Velvet*. At the time it was not released as a single and remained an album cut during Reeves’ lifetime.
In 1973, nearly nine years after Reeves’ death, RCA Victor issued the recording as a single and as the title track of a new compilation album. The single reached number twelve on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart. It also charted at number nine on the Canadian RPM country list and number fifteen in South Africa. The accompanying album peaked at number eleven on the Billboard country albums chart.
The lyric is a quiet, questioning address to a departing lover. The singer asks whether the relationship can be set aside so easily and whether the other person will simply walk away without looking back. Reeves delivers the lines in his familiar smooth, unhurried style, with the polished Nashville Sound arrangement that characterized much of his early-1960s work.
By the early 1970s RCA continued to draw on Reeves’ unreleased and lesser-known recordings for new singles and albums. “Am I That Easy to Forget” belonged to that ongoing series of posthumous releases that kept his name active on the country charts long after 1964. The 1973 single demonstrated that material recorded more than a decade earlier could still find an audience.
Within Reeves’ catalogue the song stands as one of the later examples of his ability to take a straightforward country ballad and give it the calm, measured quality that defined his mature style. It remains a modest but consistent entry among the many posthumous hits that extended his commercial presence into the following decade.
